Ajith - The New Overseas King of Opening

Ajith's opening is much talked about back home in Tamil Nadu. But, now he is turning out to be a big draw in the overseas markets as well. According to trade reports, Billa 2 has collected £35,265 in UK on Friday (which is more than 30 lakhs) and A$ 24,469 (which is close to 14 lakhs) in Australia on Friday. The number of screens in these overseas markets was limited. Still the collection has stood out. Looks like Billa 2 is opening new avenues for the King of Opening. Collections from other overseas markets are awaited.

Deepika Padukone, the heroine of Kochadaiyaan is full of praise for Rajinikanth. She said that the thing she likes most about Rajini is his child - like enthusiasm. The model turned actress revealed that nobody could match his high energy levels or his passion for his craft on the sets not even those who are half his age.Rajini's professionalism and tendency to be a perfectionist makes it easy for everybody working with him. Rajini's old school to go hi-tech

In 1913, during the British Rule, a Government primary school was started in Kavipuram, Bangalore. This school used to have thousands of students studying there. With those children was a student named Shivaji Rao, who today is lovably called Superstar Rajinikanth.The school which was very famous till a few years back, has only got 300 and odd students today, due to its lack of facilities. But the school is all set to be renovated into a hi-tech, multi specialty school, thanks to the Karnataka state Rajini Seva Samiti. After a long struggle, the Rajini Seva Samiti has made the Karnataka Government to accept to renovate the school. A massive sum of Rs 81.4 lacs have been allotted by the state for making the face lift.

Trisha made her Bollywood debut with Priyadharshan's Khatta Meetha but that failed to make an impact. Later she was supposed to be a part of Ek Prem Katha with Prateik Babbar but that did not pan out either. Now it looks like she has another chance to make it big in Bollywood thanks to her Manmadhan Ambu director, KS Ravikumar.Apparently, KSR is keen to cast her in the Hindi remake of Samy with Sanjay Dutt which he will be directing as she did such a good job in the original film with Vikram. Ameer reveals about Aadhi Bhagavan

Recently there have been reports making rounds saying Jayam Ravi is playing a dual role in Ameer’s much awaited Aadhi Bhagavan. But Ameer in a recent interview has washed off those reports as rumours. The Paruthiveeran director said, “Jayam Ravi isn’t playing a dual role in the film. He plays a CBI officer. Hence he appears in a number of attires.”The director also revealed that the story starts in Andhra and travels through Bangkok and Mumbai and ends in Goa. “This film might not be as massive as a James Bond movie. But I’m sure it will be of a western quality,” added the director.Ameer is also sure that the film will have all the elements that are required to hold the audience to their seats. “Aadhi Bhagavan neither has a comedian nor comedy sequences. But this film will have all the other elements like action, dance and songs that will hold the audience till the end,” said an enthusiastic Ameer.

The Amazing Spiderman rakes in handsome returns

Thanks to a huge opening weekend, the latest edition of the Spiderman series has attained the superhit status at the Indian box-office. It must be noted that this film released in India, a week earlier than the US.Though the weekdays saw progressive drops in collections, the strength of the opening weekend has made sure that the movie is a profitable venture for all the Indian exhibitors and distributors. The word of mouth for the movie is mixed and the movie will fall short of other Hollywood blockbusters in India such as 2012 and Avatar. The overall collections would just about touch the 50 crores net mark which is a far cry from what was expected at the end of the first weekend. But, still this figure is higher than what recent action blockbusters like The Avengers and Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol collected in India.

The 59th Annual South Filmfare Awards was a glittering affair held at the Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai. The galaxy of stars from all the film industries in the South were present. Aadukalam was the big winner of the evening picking up five awards for best actor (Dhanush), best film, best director (Vetri Maaran), best cinematographer (R Velraj), and best music director (GV Prakash).It was a special night for Shruti Haasan as she got the award for best debut and the black lady was presented to her by her father, Kamal Haasan. Anjali won in the best actress category for Engeyum Eppothum and Ananya was given the best supporting actress award for the same film. Ajmal won the best supporting actor award for Ko. Allap Raju was named the best playback singer for Ennamo Etho from Ko. Chinmayee received the best female playback singer award for Sara Sara from Vaagai Sooda Va. The award for best lyricist went to Vairamuthu for the same song.

Vijay's maiden production venture, Sattam Oru Iruttarai which is a remake of one of his father, SA Chandrasekhar's films directed by his cousin Sneha ran into troubled waters but now it is back on course. Vikram Prabhu who was the original choice as the leading man had started shooting for the film but opted out to complete his Prabhu Solomon film, Kumki. Later Karthika who was supposed to play the heroine also left the project.Thaman, a newcomer and Bindhu Madhavi will be the replacements. The former is supposed to be very good looking and talented and the makers are confident that he will make a mark. Piaa Bajpai and Reemma Sen also have pivotal roles with the latter playing a cop. Reemma has already started reshooting the scenes with Thaman that had previously been filmed with Vikram Prabhu.

Shankar’s I is probably the hottest thing in Kollywood right now. The team’s tactic of revealing things now and then is proving to be very useful in building up the much needed curiosity. The latest news is that the film’s lead Vikram has two get ups in the film. For one of the roles he will have to look slim and fit and for the other he must put on weight to look fat.

Thuppakki woes haunt AR Murugadoss

It’s not going very smooth for AR Murugadoss and his Thuppakki team. The case that was filed by Ravi Devan about the film’s title hasn’t been resolved yet. Thuppakki’s teaser trailer, that was to be released during the start of this month, has been delayed due to this.A very concerned director AR Murugadoss, in his social networking page wrote, “Waiting for the title issue to get resolved legally... Then teaser will be out soon. Sarath Kumar in a recent chat session with the press clarified about his and wife Radikaa's alleged problem with Vishal. Radikaa had filed a complaint against Vishal claiming that a cheque to the amount of 9 crores had bounced. Kaliyugam is another movie with predominantly newcomers at the helm. The music has been provided by 3 different composers and it was released recently by director Rajesh. On to the music review now.

This number has hip hop touches and an unmistakable western influence. An average number on the whole with a few traces of one of Thaman’s previous numbers (‘ThikkiThiiki’) for the movie ‘Nagaram’. The instrumental bit towards the end lifts the song a notch higher.

This is a proper ‘sarakku gaana’ number with funny lyrics and foot tapping percussions running all along. Other essential elements of a ‘gaana’ song like the trumpet are also there. Will strike a chord with the youth for the easy charm that it has. Connoisseurs of music might have a different take on this though.

This one is a gentle romantic number with nice guitar accompaniments. It will ensure a pleasant listening experience. Haricharan delivers as expected and the instrumentals before both the stanzas stand out. The song grows on you and ends up being more than a decent number. The way the guitar matches the verses is another standout element of this song.

Another passable song about the pain associated with love. There is a touch of melancholy associated with the instrumentals as well. On the whole, a composition with elaborate instrumentals and heartfelt vocals.

A nice foot tapping number that is light hearted and enjoyable. The song never dips and maintains its level right through. There are a variety of instruments used tastefully and the lyrics talk about the hero’s lady love and how she has totally bowled him over. Might visit the charts.

Music is by A J Daniel, a former associate of Harris Jeyaraj. Does this movie match up to the ‘Nakka Mukka’ sensation created by the director in his earlier film? Read on to find out.

Lyricist: P.V.PrasadThe song opens with striking string instrumentals and proceeds to be a soulful romance pathos number with steady beats. The instrumentals add to the mellow ‘feeling’ of the song and Karthik is consistent as always. A special mention for the ending of the song where the beats fade away beautifully. 

En Kadhal Neethane…
InstrumentalThis is the instrumental version of the previous song. The piano dominates with ample accompaniments from the violin. But when the instrumentals become a bit heavy, the serene mood that was created at first is lost and a heroic mood spills over. A nice attempt for sure.

Lyricist: P.V.PrasadBenny Dayal is generally given cheerful songs that have Western influences and this song is no different. There are foot tapping beats and the mood of the song is typically youthful. Priya Hemesh’s humming bits go with the mood of the song and there is a very small rap portion thrown in as well.

Lyricist: P.V.PrasadThis is a very short number with minimum instrumental accompaniments and just the refreshing voice of Priya carrying the number through. 

Oru Parvaiyile…

Lyricist: P.V.PrasadThis ‘love failure’ number takes off from where the previous number ended. This time it’s Harish Raghavendra doing the honors. We know his high pitched style of singing and this song stays true to his style. The instrumentals comprising nadaswaram and violin add value to the song which is a bit dramatic and old fashioned. A decent effort that is high on tempo, nevertheless.

The shoot for the Rajinikanth starrer Kochadaiyaan has been wrapped up. The post production of the film is in its full swing. The music that has been composed by AR Rahman will be released in Tokyo, as a treat to Rajini’s fans in Japan. There are also reports wandering around, whispering that the film might hit the screens on the birthday of Rajinikanth, which falls on December 12^th.The premiers have been planned across Los Angeles, London and India.The magnum opus film’s satellite rights have been sold for a mammoth to Jaya TV. Lakshmi Ganapathy films have bagged the Telugu rights of the film.In a statement Mr. Sunil Lulla, Managing Director, Eros International Media Ltd, said, “We are confident that like Sivaji and Robot this will also be a landmark film in Rajnikanth’s career. We will also be releasing a separate Hindi version along with the Tamil version.”

The AR Murgadoss directed Thupakki will have a number in which Vijay will dance atop a train constructed by art director Sunil Babu.The song was shot in the Mumbai - Pune Highway recently and was choreographed by Shobi and canned by Santosh Sivan. What with the shooting soon to be over, Thupakki is expected to be released mid-August.

First there were reports that Aamir Khan was keen that Rajini do an important role in his film for Yash Raj Productions, Dhoom 3. No sooner had the smoke gone down on that one than we are hearing that Rajini will be doing an item number for Aamir Khan starrer, Talassh in what is likely to be the costliest item number in history with Rajini getting a whopping sum of 15 crores as remuneration.Sources from Rajini's camp have dismissed all these reports as rumors saying that no such offer has been made. Salman's brother Sohail Khan's driver Dhananjay Pimpale was arrested and released later after he was involved in a rash driving incident that killed a 70-year-old woman. The incident happened on Sunday night and police claimed that none of the Khan siblings were in the car when the incident happened.According to the Bandra police, the Land Cruiser is registered in the name actor Arbaaz Khan, but was used by his brother Sohail. director ameer again the hero

Director Ameer has said that he will wrap up his Jayam Ravi starrer, Aadhi Bhagawan in two weeks and move on to his next project. He will be playing the hero in Karu Pazhaniappan's Pandiya Vamsam. Ameer revealed that the story will be narrated against a rural backdrop and Raj Kiran is the other hero in this film. Ameer was supposed to work on Bharathiraja's Annakodiyum Kodiveeranum but that did not work out. Karu Pazhaniappan had teamed up with Arulnidhi for Ashokamitran but that project also failed to take off. Both are hoping that everything goes smoothly this time around.

Saif is back to doing a light entertainer after ‘Love Aaj Kal’. For ‘Cocktail’, he joins hands with the people who complemented him in ‘Love Aaj Kal’, Imtiaz Ali, Deepika Padukone and composer Pritam. This Illuminati Films’ presentation hits the screens on July 13^th. On to the music review now.

Tumhi Ho Bandhu...  
Kavita Seth & Neeraj Shridhar

A rocking number to kick start the album.  There is a slight touch of pathos in Kavita Seth’s voice which absolutely complements Neeraj Shridhar’s ‘Tumhi Ho Bandhu’ refrain. The beats are racy and it is sure to rock the dance floors in the country. Pritam is becoming an expert at such pacy numbers. The trailer has already made this song hugely popular.

Daaru Desi...
Shalmali Kholgade & Benny Dayal

This song has a classy guitar presence and moves at a good pace. Very relaxing number with the 2 singers perfectly complementing each other. The female singer’s voice (of ‘Pareshaan’ from ‘Ishaqzaade’ fame) in particular is sexy.The musical arrangements are also trendy.

Yaariyan...  
Mohan Kanan & Shilpa Rao

This is a beautiful soft rock number with soulful vocals by Mohan Kanan. A totally poignant number that is high on feeling. Mohan shifts pitches very easily. This is one song where the vocals are a bit Hindustani while the arrangement of the song is totally western. A superb attempt at fusion with Shilpa Rao making a nice little contribution as well. The ending is terrific as well.

There is a reprise of the same song which is mellow and mushy with the piano taking over. Sunidhi Chauhan and Arijit Singh do the honors. Sunidhi’s versatility comes to the fore yet again. Arijit sounds like A.R.Rahman at parts and his range is wonderful. This one is a winner as well.

Second Hand Jawaani...
Miss Pooja, Neha Kakkar & Nakkash Aziz

This one sticks out from the rest of the songs in that it is totally desi and local. An item number with prominent use of the magudi / punji (used by snake charmers). Like other item numbers, this will make you groove and shake your head. But the tune is nothing great.

Tera Naam Japd iPhiran...  
Javed Bashir, Nikhil D'Souza & Shefali Alvaris

This is a beautiful fusion between soulful Punjabi and ‘Aqua’ style bubblegum pop. Tastefully done, upmarket and experimental.

There is a version 2 of the same song which has been made for the dance floors. This one sounds better than other remixes going around. The fusion is just too good that even a remix can’t take the sheen away from it.

Luttna (Saif UlMalook)...  
Masuma Anwar, Anupam Amod & Sahir Ali Bagga

This is yet another delightful number which is highly indigenous. One of Pritam’s best efforts. The sound effects in this song are random, heavy and psychedelic. There is a small ‘sufi’ touch as well to this song. All said, it is the vocals that do the trick. It is pretty uplifting.

There is a version 2 for this song as well. The instrumentals for this one are much sober and pleasant with a slight rock touch. The vocals are terrific yet again.

Jugni...  
Arif Lohar and Harshdeep Kaur

This song featured in Coke Studio Pakistan is basically a Punjabi folk song. Pritam has reused it. It is addictive, foot tapping and will give you a high. Such is the passionate nature of the song. Both the singers are ‘A-Rate’. What a finish to the album.

Verdict: A smashing album from Pritam. After ‘Love Aaj Kal’, the Saif - Pritam combo has come up with another album that will rock the charts for some time to come. Scores high on variety and innovation.
